When I just want to play with paint, I usually do small pieces like this (about 4" high") just for fun. I used to paint them in my sketchbook, but these days I use small pieces of illustration board or masonite so I can put them on a shelf when they are done! I don't usually spend more than an hour or two on them. Sometimes that's all at once and sometimes it's in 15-20 minute bursts over a couple of days as kind of goofing off from my 'real' work.
Big bristle brush,acrylic paint nuff said.
