Wc-heads.72 by MichaelDooney Wc-heads.72 by MichaelDooney
I've been on my tiny water color heads kick again lately. I am still trying to get a handle on what works best for me, paper and media wise. I find that with watercolor, the details get a bit softened, with gouache, there can be an overall grainy look. I tried acrylic washes last night (lower right) and I like the way it holds the detail and still has a soft-ish clean look.
For all of these I am working from magazine photos or old hollywood bw photos which have good directional lighting.

What paper are you experimenting with? It looks like the the top drawings have some buckling in the paper.

Love the one in the top right, hair flowing is nice and the bg on the right side of her face makes her features pop.

yeah the ones with the ripples were done on very thin rag paper I had...not really watercolor paper at all. Others where on a Canson watercolor pad, and the acrylic ones on the lower right were on bristol board.

Great practice session. I'd say you got some real good results. Sounds like this way ( with the acrylic wash) might be the way to go too based on your notes
