Fun with Backerboards by MichaelDooney Fun with Backerboards by MichaelDooney
I don't normally do 'warm up' drawings as many artists do to start their work days, but about a week ago I thought that I would just give it a try for fun. Since I know that I have a tendency to can get carried away with things and turn fun in work, I've been sticking to BW markers drawings on comic backer boards. I'm also trying to keep them in the 30 minute to 1 hour range. I'll probably bring a stack of them with me to Megacon and see what happens.

One of the things I've always liked about busts (especially really good ones) are that you get a lot more detail in the face and it's close enough up that you can really see them. I've never really noticed how different the facial structure is on your art until now. I love how the cheekbones are more prominent on WW and Red Sonja and the difference in lip shape. I'd love to see more close-ups and body part doodles, even from you...

(Thanks for sharing, is what I mean!)

Totally terrific! I've actually started doing this as well, but going full rendering with gray markers-- I've been doing this as exercise...

Great idea man, how are they to draw on I always thought they'd make great art drawing boards. And those packs you can buy are pretty dirt cheap. I think these'll sell great.

it seems like backer boards are different from company to company... most have a slick side and a dull side, the dull side is good for markers, the slick side is not ;)

These are great. There are ate least 4 in this image I would have been interested in. I know last year was slow for you, but do you have plans of attending FanExpo this year in Toronto?

Yeah it was pretty slow last year so I don't know about going back. One thing I noticed is that most of the 'real' pro comic artists were around the edges of Artist Alley not down the aisles where I was...I wonder if that would make a difference.
